Prescription Plan Saves Users More Than $57,000

June 28, 2008 – By Alaina Potrikus, Staff Writer

A prescription drug discount program has saved Madison county residents more than $57,000 since it started last November.

County officials contracted with ProAct Inc., a division of Kinney Drugs, last year to participate in a program that reduces the cost of prescription drugs to the underinsured or uninsured residents. The company mailed discount cards to 35,000 Madison County residents in November. The discount program is aimed at residents with no insurance, but insured residents can use the card to save money on drugs not covered by their health plan.

There is no cost to the residents or the county for the program, but residents are saving an average of $16.39 per prescription, according to ProAct. During the first month of the program eight card users saved $84.86; last month 326 card users saved $12,575.

“The savings for the residents and growth of the program tells it all,” said Madison County Board of Supervisors Chairman John Becker in a press release.

Oswego, Cayuga, Onondaga and Seneca counties also joined the program last fall, and Cayuga County has saved about $40,000 so far, according to ProAct.
