Discount Card Brings Drug Savings
June 28, 2008
To the Editor:
A prescription discount card sponsored by Madison County has saved residents more than $57,044.88 since November. Cayuga County reported a $40,000 savings for the same time period.
John Becker, chairman of the Madison County Board of Supervisors said, “The savings for residents and growth of the program tells it all. I hope more Madison County residents will sign up for this money saving program.”
ProAct Inc. a division of Kinney Drugs, is a discount program that reduces the cost of prescription drugs for underinsured and uninsured residents.
The program was implemented by the Madison County Board of Supervisors in November of 2007. During the first month of the program eight discount drug cards were used. In May of 2008 this number increased to 326. As the program grows, so do the savings. Eight card users saved $84.46 in November of 2007. In may 326 card users saved $12,575.
According to ProAct's recent report there were 694 claims in May of 2008, with a total of 3,026 claims since the program began for an overall $57,044.88 and an average savings of $16.39 per prescription. There is no cost to the residents or the county for this program.
On Nov. 26, 2007 35,000 discount prescription drug cards were mailed out to the residents of Madison County. There are extra discount prescription drug cards available in the lobby of the county office building in Wampsville for anyone who is in need of a card and did not receive one.
Madison, Onondaga, Oswego, St. Lawrence and Seneca counties participate in the ProAct discount prescription drug plan. Tompkins and Oneida counties have similar prescription discount plans through other companies.
